There comes a point, usually mid-week, mid-deadline, when the city starts to feel a little too loud, and the only sensible response is to point the car north. A weekend away doesn’t need to be far. It just needs to be a world apart from the one you left, and the Sunshine Coast is our reliable reset, a stretch we know well and return to often.
On this short break, it was Peregian Beach that held us, a village we’ve watched quietly come into its own over the past few years. The dining has sharpened, the shopping has grown seriously covetable, and yet somehow the place has stayed exactly, wonderfully itself: relaxed, barefoot, in no hurry to impress anyone.
Peregian has always occupied a particular place in the heart. Fifteen minutes south of busy Hastings Street, it holds onto the spirit of old Noosa, the barefoot, salt-tangled ease that first drew people to this coastline, wrapped around a wide patrolled beach, a walkable village, and a community that still runs on first names. It is the coast with its shoes off.
HOME, FOR A WHILE: STAYING IN AN ALLAWAH NOOSA LUXURY HOLIDAY HOME
Our base for three nights was a luxe private holiday rental apartment by Allawah Noosa, a few minutes’ walk from the beach trails, with the ocean laid out clearly beyond the living room and terrace. It was cool, calm and quietly considered, the kind of space that reveals its intelligence slowly: linen you want to sink into, a walk-in rain shower, a freestanding bath positioned for long soaks, a palette drawn straight from the dunes outside.
It felt like ours within minutes. While my partner unpacked our supplies into the kitchen, I poured us something cold before we stretched out on the sun loungers on the terrace and settled in, the sort of easy arrival that tells you the weekend has properly begun.
As it happened, we were the very first guests to stay in the coastal apartment. It is, quite simply, the sort of place you don’t want to leave, which turned out to be the theme of the whole weekend.

Allawah Noosa’s luxury holiday homes are not anonymous rentals but properties chosen the way you’d choose a home: for the way the morning sun falls, for the quality of the finishes, for the feeling of belonging somewhere the moment you walk in. SPLURGE-WORTHY SHOPPING IN PEREGIAN BEACH VILLAGE
You could, in theory, spend a whole weekend in Peregian without straying more than a few hundred metres, and the village would happily oblige. This compact, tree-shaded square has quietly become one of the most rewarding pockets of retail on the coast, the kind of place where an intended ten-minute browse dissolved into a leisurely afternoon.
Start at Marr-kett, which deals in the beautifully one-of-a-kind: vintage finds, specialty design pieces and homewares with a collector’s eye, the sort of shop where you arrive looking for nothing and leave carrying something you’ll treasure. Nearby, Bedouin Traders trades in luxury lifestyle apparel and homewares, its rooms layered with earthy textures and thoughtful, worldly pieces, while Aztec House works a similar seam with real flair, curated rugs, homewares and fashion alongside ethically sourced treasures and vintage finds gathered from across the globe. Cloth & Hide draws the slow-fashion faithful with sustainable pieces made to be worn for years rather than seasons, and for coastal ease there’s The Local, all retro vinyl and sun-washed apparel. In short, it’s a village that rewards the curious and tests the wallet and the willpower!
On the first and third Sunday of every month, Peregian Park gives way to the Peregian Beach Markets: from 7 am to 12.30pm, more than a hundred stalls of handmade crafts, local artwork, organic produce, upcycled goods, growers and musicians spill out toward the sand. It is community as theatre, and utterly worth setting an alarm for.
THE BEST TABLE IN TOWN: WHERE TO EAT IN PEREGIAN BEACH
Peregian eats well, and it eats seriously. The village’s headline act is Bask, a two-hatted restaurant tucked into the square where paddock-to-plate cooking is treated as an unhurried art. Under chef Jack Madden, this is a kitchen that celebrates the Sunshine Coast’s larder with precision and flair, its seasonal menu shifting with the best of the moment, all paired with a diverse wine list spanning local and international drops. The renowned Long Lunch, held the first Sunday of every month, is a languid, several-hour affair, the sort of ritual you plan a weekend around.
For something with the volume turned up, Mariella Mexicantina brings colour and swagger, an intimate surfside cantina trading in regional Mexican street food, or antojitos, those “little cravings”, alongside artisan agave spirits and natural wine, its menu shifting with whatever is best that week. It was made for a first night: low light, good noise, a margarita or two, and the easy knowledge that home was a short walk away.
Not every night called for a table, though. On our second night, we stayed in, and the luxury holiday home made it a pleasure. We’d spent the afternoon gathering as we went, a wedge of cheese here, a jar of olives there, cured meats and fresh bread and a bottle of something local, picked up from hinterland makers and village shops along the way. Back home, we laid it all out across the kitchen island, carried plates to the terrace, and grazed slowly as the light went soft over the water. It made for one of the best meals of the trip. No booking required.
And then, a short drive north, there is the local secret worth sharing: our perfect place for a relaxed Sunday afternoon. Perched atop the dunes at neighbouring Sunshine Beach, the Sunshine Beach Surf Club is the address locals return to again and again, and one look from its open ocean-view deck explains why. Its kitchen punches well above its station, salt-and-pepper calamari billed as the best on the coast, handmade pizzas and a signature nasi goreng pork belly, courtesy of Noosa-native head chef Darren Sandilands. Come for sundowners as the light turns the water molten, stay for dinner, and toast the fact that the best seat on the coast comes without the Hastings Street price tag.
THE PERFECT LUXURY HOLIDAY HOME ON THE SUNSHINE COAST
By our final morning, we’d packed a lot into a short break. We’d swum before breakfast and browsed until lunch, watched migrating whales from a surf club deck, and driven up into the green hills of the hinterland, just because we could. But our favourite hours were the quiet ones, back at our Allawah Noosa luxury holiday home with the ocean stretched out beyond.
